I am replete, as stuffed as a horse-hair sofa, as beached as a hump-back whale. I can hardly breathe, I can hardly move but I manage to stagger into the street. My food odyssey is over, reality is revisited, and I’m back in the world of belching fumes, over-heated concrete and cacophonous sounds!

What an experience! I have scaled the heights of culinary delights and must now retrace my steps to more mundane matters. My personal Nirvana is behind me!

Decision Time (11:30am)

Fatigue overcomes me and I settle at a table. An elderly waitress, in her 60s, hands the menu gently to me, her hands as fragile as china, her cheeks as ripe as peaches. Time for food, I glance at the vibrant colors of the menu and rifle through it again and again, knowing that it is impossible for me not to eat everything! I consider the chef’s recommendations and I think for a while: food is for one’s pleasure, as well as to survive but I shouldn’t strain my brain just to pick what I want to eat.

Finally, inspiration dawns, I resolve on the pig’s descendants in the form of glistening ham and cascading sausages on piquant fried rice. Last but not least, a towering mound of tempting trifle. A tasty treat indeed!

Upon my arrival at the café, I encounter a whole new world. I am in nirvana. This café is a true-life destination, with a fascinating blend of multi-culture and modern design, in a unique space appealing at the same time to the eye, the palate and the senses.

With zealous fervor, I try to inhale the scent of the strawberries lying on a just-born cheesecake… inhale the richness of them and subsequently, savor their flavor and the cheesy bed they’re resting on. Besides the cheesecake, there is an alluring variety of scrumptious selections all from different parts of the globe. And so, it turns out to be a “dilemma” on what to order. My “picnic” to take outside or a feast to dine on inside? My baguette, should it be on whole-wheat or on herbal dough, should I have honey ham or oven-roast turkey, add in creamy cheese or tangy taramosalata? Should I pig-out on all the salad or be selective; crispy cos, sun-dried tomatoes, crunchy onions, diet-friendly bean sprouts all together with coronary-inducing mayo? The alternative being slouching on their comfy couches and choosing from their daily specials: creamy Italian risotto (YUM!!!), delicious Japanese sukiyaki, British bangers and mash or Mediterranean seafood bake? Wow, my mind whirls like a maelstrom with this decision making process!

The smell of fresh baked bread wafts around a street corner, luring me ever forwards. It tempts me to buy a picnic. This image… so picturesque… drifts constantly across my brain. My senses are eager to taste some heavenly food— the crunch of baguette, the salty tang of butter and wild strawberries that grow like rubies (my favorite), creating a mouth-watering sensation. The more I think about food, the more my tummy rumbles— I just can’t resist. I’m wandering aimlessly in the familiar streets around my home and this greedy obsession is just not anticipated.

To my delight, I spot a café in the distance. Joy courses through my veins, I spy FOOD! I speed towards it like a lunatic bear chasing its prey. The fantastic fragrance of food… so strong… so intense, that it overpowers the stifling odor of pollution. A whiff of outstanding smoothies, a hint of boiling fondue— this unique aroma is a satisfaction profound.
